Calls and SMS with a Data-Only eSIM

Navigating communication with a data-only eSIM might seem challenging, but it’s straightforward with the right settings. Even if your eSIM is data-only, you can seamlessly use your primary line for voice calls and SMS, ensuring comprehensive connectivity on your travels.

To maintain your primary line for calls and texts while using your eSIM for data, follow these steps to set your primary line as the default for voice communication:

For iOS Users:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Cellular.
  2. Select your Main/Primary line and toggle ON “Turn On This Line.”
  3. Return to Cellular settings and tap on Default Voice Line, choosing your Main/Primary line.
  4. Ensure your eSIM remains selected for cellular data to enjoy uninterrupted data service.

For Samsung Devices:

  • Via Quick Settings Panel:

    • Swipe down to expand the full menu.
    • Locate and tap on CALLS | TEXT MESSAGES | MOBILE DATA settings.
    • Choose your Main/Primary line for calls and SMS.
    • Confirm your eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  • Via Settings:

    • Go to Settings > Connections > SIM card manager.
    • In the Preferred SIM card section, set your Main/Primary line for calls and SMS.
    • Ensure mobile data is set to your eSIM.

For Pixel Devices:

  1. Access Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs.
  2. Activate your Main/Primary line by toggling “Use SIM.”
  3. Set preferences for Calls and SMS to your Main/Primary line through the Calls Preference and SMS Preference settings.
